Do oysters live under the sand so I have to dig for them?

Or are they above the sand just sort of hanging out like ? If they are under the sand how will I know, will it be the same as with clams, little like holes in the sand that squirt water? Or do oysters have the little stick like tubes that stick out above the water. Please help.
